FIRE CODES

The American National Standard Institute has developed many of the standards and tests used to determine fenestration product code compliance. In accordance with ANSI fire labeling requirements, door and frame manufacturers must hire independent agencies to test their products and assess their code ratings. Benchmark Doors are assessed by Intertek Testing Services, using the  Warnock Hersey certification mark.

Intertek Testing Services tests doors, frames and door & frame assemblies for fire door applications, and provides Warnock Hersey certification labels to manufacturers for product lines which successfully pass the tests.

Benchmark offers a broad spectrum of residential steel doors and frames with the Warnock Hersey certification mark. A nominal fee is charged for the use of the WHCM.

Some building code inspectors will accept a manufacturer's affidavit label which asserts the code values given for a particular application. Affidavit labels are available free of charge.

Another cost saving option regarding fire labels is Benchmark's fire rated system. Fire rated systems require only one tested fire label, cutting the labeling requirement and the cost in half. Fire rated systems include listed assemblies for the door opening, frame and other materials.

Notes on Fire Door Requirements
  1. Fire rated door assemblies require a labeled door, a labeled frame, a listed lock device, listed closing device, and steel bearing hinges. Non-steel bearing hinges are acceptable as tested on listed assemblies.

  2. In general, the required hourly rating of the door assembly is 3/4 of the hourly rating of the wall it is being installed into.

  3. The minimum rating of any component in the assembly determines the achieved rating as the assembly: a 1 1/2 hour door installed into a 20-minute frame results in a 20-minute assembly.

  4. Subdivision of non-rated components or devices in the door assembly can only result in a reduction in or a voiding of the overall fire protection rating.

  5. Most fire door installations are governed by NFPA 80- Fire Doors and Windows.
