The

Anchor |
A
device for attaching a frame to the surrounding
structure.

|
Astragal |
A
molding attached to the leading edge of one leaf of a
pair of doors for sealing against the passage of weather
and light between the doors. Generally equipped with a
vertical locking device, such as throw bolts.

Base Frame |
The
half of a split-jamb frame in which the door is hung.
Adjusta-Fit™ and Adjusta-Trim™ frames have 16-gauge base
frames.

Blank Jamb |
A
vertical member of a frame without any preparation for
hardware.
 |
|
Blank Strike Filler |
A
plate installed in the mortised strike cutout of jambs
when the mortise is not needed.
 |
|
Brickmold |
A
decorative molding used to finish the exterior face of a
wood frame at a wall joint.
 |
|
Buck |
Slang
term for a door frame.
 |
|
Closure Frame |
That
portion of a split jamb frame that is applied to the
base frame to finish the opening. Opening sizes at 1/2"
intervals from 4 1/8" to 10 5/8". Adjusta-Trim™ and
Adjusta-Fit™ frame closures are available in sizes
ranging from 3 5/8" to 10 5/8" and are adjustable up to
a half inch.

Cut-out |
A
preparation for hardware and/or accessories, such as
lites, mail slots, etc.

|
Door Bottom |
A
seal at the bottom of a door. This seal is sometimes
referred to as a sweep and may be either fixed or
adjustable.

Door Clearance |
The
space between the door and the frame rabbet, between
door and finished floor, or between meeting edges of
pairs of doors.

|
Double Lock Preparation |
Two
strike preparations in the same strike jamb.
 |
|
Embossed Door |
A
metal door with designs stamped in the face sheets on
both sides of the door.
 |
|
Face |
The
exposed part of a frame parallel to the face of the
wall.
 |
|
Floor Clearance |
Clearance between the bottom of the door and the
finished floor (except carpeting). When carpeting is
used, the floor clearance shall be measured to the floor
under the carpet.

|
Flush Bolt |
The
locking devise mortised into an astragal which secures
the astragaled door of a pair of doors in a closed
position. The flush bolt engages in the sill and the
header to hold the door in the closed position.

Flush Door |
A
door with uninterrupted flat faces.
 |
|
Frame Clearance |
The
space between the door and the stop of a frame. Normally
designed to accommodate rubber silencers or
weatherstripping.

|
Full Lip Strike |
A
strike with its lip the same dimension as the strike.
(Used with a lock).
 |
|
Hand |
Term used to designate the
direction in which a door swings.
 |
|
Header |
The
horizontal frame member at the top of an opening, or the
top member of a transom frame. Sometimes referred to as
a head bar.

|
Hinge Backset |
The
distance from the leading edge of a hinge to the stop on
a frame.
 |
|
Hinge Jamb |
The
vertical member of a frame prepared for the installation
of the hinges.
 |
|
Inactive Leaf |
That
active leaf of a pair of doors that is normally held
closed by the top and bottom astragal bolts.
 |
|
Insulated Core |
A
material used inside a door to reduce its thermal
conductance such as polyurethane or polystyrene.
 |
|
Interior Trim |
A
decorative molding used to finish the face of a frame at
the wall joint.
 |
|
Kerf |
A
groove in jamb and head sections to receive
weatherstripping or other seal.
 |
|
Labeled Door |
A
door that conforms to all applicable requirements and
procedures of governing labeling authority (usually
having to do with fire safety) and bears its
identification.
 |
|
Labeled Frame |
A
frame that conforms to applicable requirements and
procedures of a governing labeling authority and bears
their identification label. (Usually has to do with fire
safety certification).
 |
|
Lock Backset |
The
distance from the edge of a door to the centerline of lock
cylinder in the face of the door.
 |
|
Lock Centerline |
Horizontal center line of hole required for lock
installation.
 |
|
Opening Size |
The
size of a framed opening measured horizontally.
 |
|
Rabbet |
The
recess or offset formed in the door frame to receive the
door.
 |
|
Remodeling Unit |
Door
and frame unit designed to fit into an existing opening,
such as a Secura-Fit™ frame and door.
 |
|
Rough Opening |
Wall
opening in the rough framing or construction into which
a door frame is to be installed.
 |
|
Shim |
A
spacer (usually a wood wedge) placed between a frame and
the wall structure to hold the frame in position.
 |
|
Spacer Pad |
A
temporary block used to maintain spacing around a door
during shipping and installation.
 |
|
Spreader Bar |
Stiffening member placed at the base of a frame to keep
it in alignment during shipping and before installation.
 |
|
Spring Hinges |
Hinges that have internal springs that automatically
close an opened door.
 |
|
Stop |
That
part of a rabbeted frame that the door closes against.
 |
|
Strike Jamb |
The
vertical member of a frame prepared for the installation
of a lock strike. Sometimes called a latch or lock jamb.
 |
|
T-Strike |
Strike with a lip smaller than the overall height of the
strike.
 |
|
Thermal Bow |
A
change from the plane surface of the door, in the form
of a bow or twist, caused by the difference in thermal
expansion of the exterior and interior faces of the door
due to a great temperature difference between the
surfaces. This condition is temporary.
 |

Thermal Break |
A
construction designed to restrict thermal conductance,
such as between interior and exterior portion of
threshold.
 |
|
Threshold |
A
raised member extending horizontally between the jambs
of a frame at the floor.
 |
|
Weatherstripping |
A
seal applied around the edges of a door to seal out
water, air, and sound.
 |
